The Language of Networks

Imagine two computers trying to communicate - they need to "speak the same language" and follow the same rules. Protocols are these agreed-upon rules for network communication. When you visit a website, your browser uses HTTP/HTTPS. When you download a file, you might use FTP. When you send an email, your email client uses SMTP. Without protocols, devices couldn't understand each other - it would be like trying to have a conversation where one person speaks English and the other speaks Japanese with no translator!
