Worked Example 2: Inverse Proportion
y is inversely proportional to x. When x = 4, y = 6. Find the value of y when x = 12.
Solution
y ∝ 1/x, so y = k/x
When x = 4, y = 6: 6 = k/4
k = 6 × 4 = 24
So y = 24/x
When x = 12: y = 24/12 = 2
Answer: y = 2
