Calculate: −8 + 5

Method 1: Number Line

Start at −8 on a number line

Move 5 places to the right (adding positive)

−8 + 5 = −3

Method 2: Think of it as subtraction

−8 + 5 is the same as 5 − 8

5 − 8 = −3
